Fifth Annual Karner Blue 5K-10K-Half Marathon

The public is invited to participate in the Fifth Annual Karner Blue 5K-10K-Half Marathon, scheduled for Saturday, July 18, 2009, to “kick off” the Karner Blue Butterfly Festival. The races will begin promptly at 8:00 AM at the Black River Area Chamber of Commerce/Field of Honor Park and will end there as well.  The age and gender categories will be 12 and under, 13-19, 20-35, 36-50, and over 50, male and female.   There will be water and food stations throughout the route with refreshments and door prizes available at the finish line.  All participants will receive a T-shirt that will be created through a design contest held at Gebhardt Elementary School and the Boys and Girls Club of Jackson County. Also, those who complete the course will receive a finisher’s medal and will be automatically entered into the prize drawings.

For the second year in a row, the Kids Race for youth eight and under, will be held. This event is sponsored by RADD (Runners Against Drunk Drivers) and will begin immediately following the start of the 5K-10K-Half Marathon events. There is no registration fee for this event and all youth race participants will receive medals, prizes and goodie bags.

New this year, will be the addition of a Corporate Challenge for the 5K event. Previous races included a Corporate Challenge for the 10K race which has gained in popularity. To encourage more team participation, the 5K Challenge will be a great addition to the event line-up.  The Corporate Challenges encourage teams of five people to enter together to win the Corporate Challenge Traveling Trophies.  Employers should consider sponsoring a team from their place of business to enter these events.  The winning teams display their respective trophy for one year and will have bragging rights as the top Corporate teams. River Country Fitness, LLC, was the Corporate Challenge winner of the 10K race for the past three years.   If you are considering entering as a team and would like more information, please contact the Chamber of Commerce Office.

The cost for pre-registration, which includes a T-shirt and a finisher’s medal, is $20.  The cost increases to $25 after June 30, until 7:30 AM on race day, at which time registration will be closed. Registration forms are available at the Black River Area Chamber of Commerce, Curves, River Country Fitness, Haag Gym, Plaza 24/7 Fitness, Lunda Recreation Center and the Black River Memorial Hospital Registration Desk.  Forms are also available on line at www.blackrivercountry.net.
