- [BRF Heart Spirits](https://www.blackrivercountry.net/brf-heart-spirits/): In 2023 at the Black River Falls High School, 99* clay hearts were posted in a permanent exhibit to acknowledge and memorialize the 97 open and unresolved missing and murdered cases in Wisconsin, plus two additional cases within the Ho-Chunk Nation. There is a permanent exhibit of hearts in the Black River Falls, High School cafeteria and can be seen from the outer windows. Two of the board mounts have a Ho-Chunk applique skirt painting in the background, and one mount has a painted vest to represent the men. The display is dedicated to the known Ho-Chunk Nation tribal members who have gone missing or have been murdered.** Our project aims to shift our collective mindset by influencing emotions through the making of clay hearts—a real, physical reminder of the women and relatives whose families hearts have been broken.

- [Jackson In Action](https://www.blackrivercountry.net/jackson-in-action/): Jackson In Action, the Service Organization of the Year, is a community coalition that promotes healthy lifestyles for children, their families and the greater community. Throughout the year, they sponsor and host various events in the community including the Triple Snowshoe Challenge, Jackson County Winterfest, Pace and Pedal event, Fall Hike Series, Hiking For Fitness, and the Gobbler Give Back 5K. Jackson In Action is in charge of the Laces to Leaders youth program that focuses on building self-confidence while training for a 5K. They also provide education at schools and community events about Harvest of the Month which highlights a different fruit or vegetable each month. They are supporters of the Jackson County Farmers Market and they host family friendly nutrition challenges with prizes for all Jackson County residents. Jackson In Action is also a designated Wisconsin Active Together Community which recognizes communities that have worked to make it easier for their residents to walk, bike and be active and have made a commitment to continue that work. A new initiative they started recently is the snowshoe checkout program. Residents can check out snowshoes for free during snowy months. Jackson In Action is an outstanding community organization.

- [Elk in Jackson County, WI](https://www.blackrivercountry.net/elk-in-jackson-county-wi/): Elk once again roam the public lands of eastern Jackson County, thanks to a reintroduction project initiated in 2015 which stemmed from a 2014 agreement between Wisconsin and Kentucky. The project aims to expand the herd to approximately 400 in the Black River Elk Range. Currently, over 180 elk freely roam the forests of Jackson County, which boast suitable habitat for these majestic animals. Many elk wear radio collars, enabling wildlife officials to monitor their movements closely. As the elk population continues to thrive, Jackson County will hold its inaugural elk hunting season in 2024.
