Cross-Country Skiing

The Black River State Forest has 22 miles of the finest cross-country ski trails in Wisconsin. Groomed trails provide enjoyment for skiers from beginner to expert. Forested, hilly terrain offers splendid scenic views combined with stretches of level landscape. One candlelight ski event is offered each year.

Jackson County’s Wazee Park now provides 11 miles of ungroomed cross-country ski trails, just east of Black River Falls. The trails give the skier a beautiful view of Wazee Lake.

Snowshoeing

The Black River State Forest has plenty of snowshoeing opportunities with extraordinary scenery and woodland wonders for beginners and experienced snowshoers. Snowshoe trails are: the 4.8 mile Smrekar Trail accessible from the Smrekar Trail Parking Lot on Smrekar Road; the 1.5 mile Pigeon Creek Nature Trail in Millston; Castle Mound State Campground trail outside of Black River Falls. With the exception of groomed cross-country ski trails, visitors may snowshoe anywhere in the park.

Downhill Skiing, Tubing, and Sledding

Bruce Mound Winter Sports Area in Merrillan offers downhill skiing, snow tubing and T-Bars. It is located three miles northwest of Hatfield.

Lunda Community Park in Black River Falls has a large hill that is perfect for snow tubing and sledding!
